Torre e Palazzo Guinigi

The Guinigi Tower was built in the second half of the 15th century and belonged to Nicolao Guinigi, a member of a rich family of merchants. The 44.25 meters high building was built of stone and brick and is special since at the top there is a hanging garden wanted by the Guinigi as a symbol of rebirth. It is worth visiting, as in addition to the garden, we can also admire the splendid panorama of the city and the surrounding mountains.

This is a wonderful tower, and the walk up entertaining. There are museum pieces along the way, and in the lobby a small museum showing the local wares. The green top is a trend from the era where they grew trees and some shrubs for shade and to relax on the top where air circulates more frequently. These are oak trees.

The tower of Lucca was built to watch over estate home and insure it would not be attacked by other locals in town or outsiders. The tower was constructed in the 15th century and has 230 steps to the top.

It is open 9-7:30 during tour season, and lesser times winter and fall. Fee is Euro 3.50, and it is located on Via S. Andrea.
